Bucharest Hosts Black Sea, Balkans Security Forum

(MENAFN) The Romanian capital of Bucharest on Tuesday became the center of high-stakes regional diplomacy as the 10th edition of the Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum opened its doors, convening senior officials, defense experts, academics, and business leaders for two days of intensive strategic dialogue.

Organized by the New Strategy Center — a Bucharest-based think tank established in 2015 — the forum spans 46 panels covering an expansive range of critical issues, including regional security architecture, energy resilience, defense posture, and emerging technological threats. The event is being held under the official patronage of Romanian President Nicusor Dan.

The forum's timing is deliberate and significant. It runs alongside the latest summit of the Bucharest Nine — a bloc comprising Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia — which convenes in the same city on Wednesday. Four overarching themes anchor the forum's agenda: the Bucharest Nine summit itself, the protracted Russia-Ukraine war, the future of transatlantic cooperation, and the mounting security implications of artificial intelligence.

Organizers say the forum will pursue a deeper understanding of the region's security requirements, strategic connectivity corridors, and the geopolitical interlinkages stretching from the Arctic and Baltic Sea down through the Black Sea to the Mediterranean — a vast strategic arc increasingly central to NATO's planning calculus.

Opening proceedings, President Dan commended the forum's role in generating actionable solutions to pressing regional challenges. He asserted that Romania is actively consolidating its international standing, reinforcing security across NATO's eastern flank, and working to bring Moldova, Ukraine, the Western Balkans, and the European Union into closer alignment.

Dan stressed the urgency of like-minded states deepening collaboration in an era defined by compounding crises — a spirit he said would drive both the Bucharest Nine summit and the upcoming NATO summit scheduled for July in the Turkish capital Ankara.

"I'm convinced that we will be able to express our solidarity in all these forums and we shall be able to remain objective. This means investment in defense, it means interoperability and a transatlantic partnership that is effective," he added.
